What is the story of Spiral: From the Book of Saw about?

Off-duty Detective Marv Bozwick pursues a criminal through a sewage pipe during a 4th of July celebration. After being attacked by a man in a pig mask, Bozwick wakes to find himself dangling by his tongue in a subway tunnel. He is offered a choice: cut out his tongue and survive, or wait until the next train comes and kill him. Bozwick can't escape the trap and is killed by the train. The following day, Captain Angie Garza assigns Detective Zeke Banks rookie William Schenk. Banks and Schenk examine Bozwick's death and discover similarities to the Jigsaw Killer's method.

Banks is caught and wakes up in a warehouse chained to a pipe with a hacksaw nearby. He contemplates chopping off his arm but escapes with a bobby pin. Peter Dunleavy, his former partner who was sacked and jailed after Banks disclosed a murder he committed, is chained up. In front of him is a gigantic glass-crushing machine that hurls shrapnel. A recording recorder says Banks may liberate him or let him die. Banks can't rescue Dunleavy since he lacks the key. Schenk staged his own death using the skinned body of the thief who lured Bozwick into the tunnels. He was the copycat all along. He says that his last name is Emmerson, the son of Charlie Emmerson, who Dunleavy shot and executed for testifying against a crooked officer. He also states that Marcus, as chief, shielded dishonest cops to clean the streets faster under Article 8.

Emmerson gives Banks a last test, showing him Marcus suspended in the air and steadily losing blood. Emmerson phones 9-1-1 and says he's being chased by a gunman, so a SWAT squad is sent to his area. He gives Banks a handgun with one cartridge and gives him the option to rescue Marcus but let Emmerson escape or murder Emmerson and let Marcus bleed to death. Banks shoots the target to free his father, then fights Emmerson. The SWAT squad enters and accidentally trips a tripwire, yanking Marcus' shackles again. Marcus' arm moves, revealing a gun, so SWAT kills him thinking he's the shooter. Emmerson flees as Banks cries.

Tobin Bell, who portrayed John Kramer/Jigsaw in all prior Saw films, did not return in Spiral (2021), making it the first film in the series without Bell or Jigsaw appearing beyond pictures. Bousman said the film's murderer is a Jigsaw copycat, not the original, and he won't replace Bell. Bell would return as Jigsaw if the plot explored Billy the Puppet's origins.

The participation of Chris Rock in Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)

Spiral: From the Book of Saw was conceived by Chris Rock as a means of revitalizing both the Saw film series and his personal career at Lionsgate.

After Jigsaw came out, Stolberg and Goldfinger were talking to series veterans Mark Burg and Oren Koules about making a new Saw movie about only John Kramer/Jigsaw and not any of his other apprentices. Burg and Koules called Stolberg and Goldfinger to tell them about Rock's ideas for a new movie, and Rock called them soon after to talk about his idea. Before that, other writers had pitched Lionsgate their ideas for the next Saw movie, but none of them had worked. Stolberg and Goldfinger, on the other hand, had come up with eight different versions of the movie before Rock came along and combined his idea with theirs. Burg and Koules asked the two to come up with a pitch for Rock. Stolberg and Goldfinger did this, and both Lionsgate and Rock liked their pitch. This led to them writing their first draft, which was approved a week after it was turned in. Rock helped Stolberg and Goldfinger write the story and rewrote it when they needed to.

In Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021), why didn't Tobin Bell appear?

Tobin Bell did not play Jigsaw in Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021), making it the first Saw movie in which Bell did not appear.

In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, Stolberg stated that Jigsaw was never included in any draft of the screenplay for Spiral (2021), as the inclusion of Jigsaw would have altered the story's foundation; they did not intend to diminish the character, but rather wanted to move the franchise in a different direction. Stolberg also felt that due to the franchise's timeline, any possible connection between John Kramer and William Schenk / The Spiral: From the Book of Saw Killer should have occurred when the latter was still a child, taking into account his portrayer's age; Stolberg and Goldfinger proposed at one point to have an after-credits sequence in which Kramer met a young Schenk after the murder of the latter's father and befriended him, possibly giving him the puppet he later uses as the

James Wan, Leigh Whannell, and Daniel Heffner, who made the original Saw, are now executive producers for Rock. Stolberg and Goldfinger were confirmed as screenwriters.

According to Burg and Koules, Rock's handling of Saw was analogous to what Eddie Murphy did for buddy cop flicks in 48 Hrs., giving the Saw series a whole new viewpoint. Similarly, Bousman stated that compared to previous installments, Spiral view page contained less violence and gore, expressing the belief that gore and violence were a gimmick for him when he first began working on the Saw films, but that both elements now serve the story, which focuses on character, tension, and fear.

Spiral: From the Book of Saw cast

Samuel L. Jackson decided to portray Chief Marcus Banks because he wanted to try something new, including the climax sequence in which his character is hung up like a marionette. Captain Angie Garza was played by Marisol Nichols, who, although being a Saw fan, preferred to watch David Fincher's Seven instead of the prior films in preparation for the part. Patrick McManus auditioned for the part of Detective Marv Bozwick, but was called back to play Peter Dunleavy, while Dan Petronijevic was cast as Bozwick.

The principal filming of The Organ Donor started on July 8, 2019, in Toronto, Ontario, with Jordan Oram acting as the cinematographer. It was announced that Rock, Jackson, Minghella, and Nichols would star in the film. Joe Drake, the chief executive officer of Lionsgate, stated that Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock, along with Max Minghella and Marisol Nichols, would make this film completely unique in the Saw canon, and that they could not wait to share this unexpected and sinister new story with fans of the franchise. This was the next level of Saw at maximum power. Rock had offered rewrites on site and entirely rewritten his character's introductory sequence. According to Bousman, a sequence with a trap had to be removed from the film because it was too violent.

The last day of shooting was on August 28, 2019, bringing an end to production. Dev Singh was in charge of the editing work that was done in post-production.

The working title of the movie was The Organ Donor until January 22, 2020, when the name Spiral and the fact that Mongrel Media would be the Canadian distributor got out. When the first teaser poster and trailer came out on February 5, 2020, it was clear that the movie's name was Spiral: From the Book of Saw.

In the United States, Spiral was going to be released on October 23, 2020 according to the film's initial release date plan, which was handled by Lionsgate Films. The original date of July 15, 2020 was pushed ahead to May 15, 2020 in July 2019. The release of the movie was pushed back to May 21, 2021, as a direct consequence of the COVID-19 epidemic. The US premiere of Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) will take place on October 8th, 2021, according to an announcement made by Lionsgate on May 25th, 2021: In Canada, Spiral was published on PVOD on June 1, 2021.

By March 3, 2022, Spiral has grossed $23.2 million in the U.S. and Canada and $17.3 million in foreign regions, for a total of $40.6 million.

In the US and Canada, Spiral (2021) came out at the same time as Those Who Wish Me Dead, Profile, and Finding You. It was expected to make between $10 million and $15 million in its first weekend from 2,811 theaters. How did reviewers rate Spiral: From the Book of Saw?

63 percent of those questioned by PostTrak gave it a good rating, while 43 percent said they would certainly recommend the movie to others. CinemaScore assigned the picture an average grade of B- on a scale of A+ to F.

A film reviewer said that the picture takes an unexpected twist or two but given that it's a thriller connected to the problem of police immorality, the film handles that theme in a bizarrely offtopic, almost garishly generic fashion.

A separate film reviewer noted the script maintained the grizzled-cop-movie tone and creates several interesting characters, but the narrative was repetitive, the mystery was annoyingly obvious, and the inventive deaths were less imaginative than before. Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) compromised entertainment value for respectability and in the process didn't quite accomplish either.

Many film reviews praised Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) as a really terrifying, albeit unevenly paced, detective thriller, while criticizing its writing for failing to communicate the possible tensions between its major characters' father-and-son relationship.

Some film reviewers praised the performances and Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)'s plain yet captivating idea, but thought the killer's voice sounded like Kermit the Frog and that the screams and gore aren't for the actual audience. They're allure.

In his one-and-a-half-star review, another reviewer criticized the film's tone and Darren Lynn Bousman's directing, calling it unreadable for its lack of tension, narrative, and plot advancement.

A separate film reviewer complimented the opening sequence but deemed it to be the film's sole redeeming feature, stating that the idea is "dishonest at best and fearmongering at worst." This film, like one of Jigsaw's easy riddles, is not as clever as it thinks it is.

Spiral (2021): From the Book of Saw is likely to offend Saw enthusiasts and mainstream viewers, according to one observer. It's a poor graphic and narrative copy of the series. The film strives to portray a socially important narrative but fails miserably. Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) is hardly a Saw picture, he said, delivering only momentarily on the primal pleasure of mutilation and none of the series' other premises. It's an artless, tactless replica of a failed police procedure pilot.

A film reviewer panned the picture, claiming that Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) stumbles over its fundamental enigma without elegance, flair, or even much thinking. Even the death traps seem uninspired. He recognized the picture's promise, adding that the most frustrating aspect of Spiral is that a better, wiser film lies behind all the foolishness. There are much too many short cuts and fast-paced situations. The awful speech that is blasted at full volume is annoying. Spiral (2021) is ultimately a picture about corrupt, even deadly officers suddenly facing a reckoning, and that kind of material has the potential to be both subversive and current for a Hollywood film, but Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) is almost irritating in how little it appears to care about any of this. It merely wants to bleed a large amount of blood, which it does.

A sequel to Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)?

In April 2021, Twisted Pictures announced production on Saw X. Bousman said the news startled him and the film's producers. He claimed that making Spiral: From the Book of Saw doesn't imply Saw is over. Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021) doesn't mean Saw IX won't happen. Not the ninth Saw film. A Saw IX might follow Jigsaw. I suppose they're waiting to see how Spiral: From the Book of Saw does and how viewers react. Josh Stolberg said the script was done in December.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Lionsgate Television chairman Kevin Beggs said in an interview in April 2021 that the company is in negotiations with Twisted Television to produce a television series based on Spiral, as well as with Mark Burg and Oren Koules.
